Durango, Colorado
If youre into city life, Durango isnt close to anywhere! The closest Macys is in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 3 1/2 hours away. But if youre into nature, Durango is close to everywhere! Nestled in the Animas River Valley of the San Juan Mountains at 6,512 feet, our hometown boasts recreation unlimited. World class fishing, mountain biking, skiing, climbing, and kayaking abound here.
It is the home to Fort Lewis College, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad, and The Purgatory Ski Area at Durango Mountain Resort. It could very well be the archaeological capital of the United States with all of the digs and Anasazi ruins here. Even the X-Files finds the region noteworthy! The people are an interesting blend of races, religions, cultures, incomes, and ages, but there is a common thread: We like it here! There is an abiding love of nature and the mountains.
The archaeological center at Mesa Verde is a
favorite spot in the Four Corners region. It is both educational and breathtakingly
beautiful in its design.
There are numerous outfitters that
can provide tours of the surrounding mountains on foot, horseback, or by four-wheel-drive.
The
Durango and Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to travel
back in time and journey through untouched beauty.
For
boaters, fishermen, and water lovers in general, there are numerous lakes (like Vallecito)
to experience.
