Plank style doors

A common alternative to the door panel is a series of planks joined by tongue and groove edges or splines.  While we often use these techniques on interior doors, we take it up a notch on exterior doors to improve their weatherability.

Since the exterior surface of the door is exposed to a variety of climatic changes, while the interior surface stays relatively constant, we utilize a stable core with the planks epoxied into place on the two surfaces.  This allows the planks to move as temperature and humidity dictate, without impacting other structural components of the door.  Most of our clients don't realize the technological effort that goes into this.  They just know it looks good and performs well!

This entry for the Will and Jean Hobbs residence in Durango, Colorado, is built from Spanish cedar with a natural finish.  Antique silver clavos accent the joints.  The hardware is Southwest Forge, Santa Fe, in Natural Steel.
